A total of three students from Beijing Normal University and six participants from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), three students and three undergraduate student staff members joined this program. The students were able to experience the diverse values of Japan, China, and Korea while deepening mutual understanding through cultural exchange and language learning. Many HUFS students spoke Japanese or Chinese, and although English was the main language of communication, conversations often took place in their native languages as well. Hiroshima University students were inspired by the high English proficiency of the Korean and Chinese participants, which motivated them to further improve their language skills. The Korean language classes included both beginners and experienced learners, and by the final day, all participants were able to enjoy simple conversations. In lectures on East Asian economy and history, students actively engaged in English discussions and presentations. The program also offered a variety of excursions including campus tours, hanbok experiences, and night bus tours of Seoul which helped strengthen friendships among the students.
Through this experience, the students enhanced their practical English and Korean communication skills while broadening their intercultural understanding and global perspectives. Some Hiroshima University students were inspired by the program to pursue long term study abroad opportunities or international careers. In addition, one HUFS student visited Hiroshima in August to participate in the “Campus Asia Plus Summer School in Hiroshima” organized by Hiroshima University. Such mutual exchanges have further deepened the relationship between the two universities. Continued collaboration with HUFS is expected to further enrich the learning experiences of students from both institutions.
