This program is a step-up, international collaborative education program consisting of four stages: an interactive online seminar (Step1), a summer course held biennially in Japan and Europe (Step 2), a semester-long study abroad (Step 3) and a global internship (Step4). Through this structure, participants can gain practical knowledge in next-generation technologies in the maritime and ocean sectors, as well as environmental forecasting technologies, while developing problem-solving abilities and cross-cultural understanding.

Details of the Student Exchange Program
【Step 1】: AI Technology x Maritime and Ocean Online Seminar
Through an interactive online seminar on the use of AI in the maritime and ocean sectors, participants will acquire foundational knowledge in these fields. The seminar is open not only to graduate students but also to motivated undergraduate students from Japan and Europe. This provides an opportunity to gain general education on maritime and ocean topics, while also fostering enthusiasm for future study abroad opportunities.
【Step 2】: Summer Course
The Summer Course is a hybrid program designed for master’s students from Japan and Europe. It includes pre-course interaction and learning using online tools to maximize the effectiveness of in-person participation. To enhance the international applicability of the program by incorporating case studies from countries with diverse backgrounds, the course venue alternates annually between Japan and Europe.
Participants will visit institutions, companies, and production sites related to the maritime and ocean sectors. They will engage in case studies on next-generation manufacturing technologies in these fields, high-resolution and high-precision environmental change forecasting technologies, and other real-world projects. Through these experiences, students will develop the ability to apply their knowledge to practical situations, strengthen their problem-solving skills for complex, real-world challenges, and build a foundation for excelling in diverse career paths in the future.
【Step 3】: Semester Exchange Program (HUSA: Hiroshima University Study Abroad Program)
This step involves semester-long exchange programs between Hiroshima University and its partner universities abroad. Building on the specialized knowledge and experiences gained thus far, the program aims to enable students to broaden and develop their research themes from a global perspective while fostering cross-cultural understanding, as well as the ability to identify and solve complex issues.
During their exchange, students will not only attend lectures but also engage in academic activities at centers and laboratories of their host universities. They will receive guidance and advice from supervisors at the host institutions, while continuing to receive support from faculty members at their home universities through online platforms.
By interacting with and receiving instruction from professors at both institutions, students will deepen their expertise related to their research themes, enhance the sophistication of their research, and explore new ideas and approaches. The program seeks to provide a dynamic and enriching academic environment for students to advance their studies and professional development.
【Step 4】: Global Internship
During the semester exchange program, based on the needs and wishes of students, internship programs will be conducted in laboratories inside and outside the university and at international research institutions such as the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), etc., to build international networks among companies, universities, and students as a foundation for their future careers, and to provide opportunities to acquire more advanced specialized knowledge and skills, as well as research and practical skills. The program provides students with opportunities to build international networks among companies, universities, and students, and to acquire more advanced specialized knowledge and skills, research skills, and practical business abilities as a basis for their future careers. In addition to acquiring practical language skills, students will deepen their understanding of business manners and working environments in different cultures through internships abroad, which will be useful for their future career development and job hunting activities
