Program

This seminar was organized as part of Hiroshima University’s “Training Program for Next Generation Leaders in AI in Maritime Economic Security and Sustainability (Japan–Europe),” conducted in collaboration with its European partner universities. The seminar also served in part as preparatory learning for the Summer Course to be held at the World Maritime University (WMU) in August.

The seminar featured two lectures on satellite remote sensing and cybersecurity in the marine and maritime sector, delivered by Prof. Hirokazu Yamamoto, Professor (Special Appointment) at the Research Institute for Ocean and Maritime Futures, Hiroshima University, and Prof. Henning Jessen of the World Maritime University (WMU).

In Prof. Yamamoto’s lecture, “Seeing the Earth and Oceans from Space: An Introduction to Remote Sensing,” students learned about the fundamentals of satellite remote sensing for observing the Earth and oceans from space, as well as its applications in marine and ocean observation.

In Prof. Jessen’s lecture, “Recent Developments in Cyber Security in the Maritime Sector,” students learned about the importance of cybersecurity and recent developments in the increasingly digitalized marine and maritime sector. At the end of the lecture, Prof. Jessen also provided an introduction to the Summer Course to be held at WMU in August.

A total of 26 students from diverse academic backgrounds participated in the seminar, including students studying marine and maritime affairs, engineering, information science, AI and data engineering, biological and life sciences, environmental sciences, and social sciences. Through the two lectures covering different but related topics, the seminar provided students with an opportunity to explore the marine and maritime sector from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Students who complete the seminar will be issued a digital badge as a certificate of completion.
